So, let’s start by learning what is a shrimp, then what is a prawn.

1. Size

The biggest difference between what is a shrimp and what is a prawn is their size. Prawns are usually much bigger in size than prawns.

The most commonly seen prawn species are prawns, also known as escapade shrimp, Harlequin prawns, blue prawns, and rock prawns. In fact, the largest species of prawns is the bluefish which is approximately 4 feet long.

2. Diet

The second main difference between what is a shrimp and what is a prawn is their diet. Most of the time, prawns prefer freshwater because they like it much more.

3. Pincers

The third major difference between what is a shrimp and what is a prawn is that shrimp have pincers, while prawns do not. Although the pincers of shrimp are not that great at trapping food, they do look really good when it comes to decorating pots and cups. Therefore, if you are someone who loves decoration, you should choose to purchase a species of shrimp that has pincers.

4. Plate-like gills

The fourth and final major difference between what is a shrimp and what is a prawn is that shrimp are completely plate-like gills while prawns have claw-like gills.

Plate-like gills of shrimp are very useful for protecting the body from various predators, such as fish. Pincers of shrimp, on the other hand, are not very useful as they have no way to protect their bodies from predators. There are even studies that show that pincers of shrimp are not good food for crabs at all.

So, what is a shrimp? Basically, a shrimp is any kind of a living fossil that does not have a hard outer shell. For example, sand shrimp, cephalopods, crustaceans, mollusks, snails, etc.

There are a few other examples, but these are the two most important types to remember. While shrimp may not be as pretty to look at as a prawn or as tasty, they are much healthier than most types of seafood.

Of course, we cannot forget to mention the obvious: shrimp is simply delicious. If you have ever eaten a hot piece of shrimp with fresh garlic, you will know exactly what I mean.

It is without a doubt the best thing that you can eat. On the other hand, prawns lack the unique taste that is associated with hot shrimp. In addition, they do not have the unique combination of flavor that is present with the delicate taste of garlicky prawns.

Final Words – Prawn Vs Shrimp

The final major distinction between the two is their size relative to each other. Prawns belong to a family of large, aquatic seafood that grow to be about 3 feet in length. Prawns also have soft, flexible bodies with sharp pointed tips.

They are easily recognized by their elongated shape, which sometimes includes a tail and a “c” shaped tail. On the other hand, shrimp are much smaller than prawns, generally only reaching a maximum weight of around 0.5 pounds.

They are very slim, streamlined, fast swimming and often have no visible shell.
